About Jay Varney
My name is Jay Varney. I was sworn in as Madera County Sheriff on January 5, 2015. I am 56 years old and have been married 32 years to my wife Amy. We have two wonderful children.
I have over 33 years of law enforcement experience, including over 21 years in leadership positions. I gained this experience at agencies with large (Dallas, TX PD), medium (Lansing, MI PD), and small (Chowchilla PD) agencies, and now lead over 124 full time employees as your elected Sheriff/Coroner. Throughout my career, I have been a results oriented, problem solving team builder. This style has served me well as your Sheriff.
I am a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia where I earned a graduate certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia. I have also earned my Executive Certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). My Bachelor’s degree is from Michigan State University and my Master’s degree in Criminology is from Fresno State.
Currently I am serving as a 2nd Vice President of the California Peace Officers Association. Additionally, I am a member of the National Tactical Officers Association, and am a life member of the NRA.
I believe my combined experience, attitude, and training are what our county needs to make Madera County the safest county in California.
