Jay Varney, current Chief of Police for the City of Chowchilla finished first in the June Primary Election with over 31% of the vote in a field of six candidates. Varney has now garnered two important local endorsements to add to a number of law enforcement officials (current and retired) from the Madera County area and around the state.

The Madera County Deputy Sheriffs Association (MDSA) and the Madera Police Officers Association (MPOA) have endorsed Jay Varney as the best candidate for Madera Sheriff/Coroner. “Chief Varney has demonstrated his ability to lead a department through tough times with what he’s done in Chowchilla. His dedication and experience are two of the many reasons he has earned the full support of the MDSA,” stated Toinie Jackson of the MDSA political committee. Dan Foss, president of the MPOA echoed their support as well; “Chief Varney has an outstanding working relationship with our command staff and he has our full support”.

With the Chowchilla POA having previously endorsed him, Chief Varney stated,“ I am very excited to receive the endorsement of these associations and the deputies, officers, and investigators they represent. This show of support by the law enforcement professionals serving you in Madera County is humbling.”

Chief Varney has 31 years of law enforcement experience. He has been serving as Chief of Police for the City of Chowchilla since March 2004. Varney has previously served Chowchilla as acting city administrator as well. In May 2014, Chief Varney received his Master’s degree in Criminology from Fresno State, and in 2013 he graduated from the FBI National Academy.
